IMPACT OF EARLY USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AMONG TEENAGERS

In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of the teenage experience. However, the implications of early access to these platforms on adolescents' psychological well being and development are a subject of increasing concern. As per data revealed by “Statista” 2021, individuals between the age of 13-19 make 31% social media users in India. Let's delve into the multifaceted effects that early exposure to social media can have on teens.

While it offers opportunities for social interaction, creativity, and access to information, early exposure can also pose significant risks to their well-being and development. Social media platforms are flooded with images of people who often don't represent the natural diversity of human bodies. These images are frequently manipulated with filters and editing tools, creating unrealistic beauty standards that teenagers feel pressured to achieve. Jean M. Twenge, author of "iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, and Less Happy” highlights the relationship between increased social media use and depression and anxiety among the teenagers. She suggests that comparison which is fueled by curated online profiles has a very negative impact on self esteem and social satisfaction.

Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to cyberbullying due to their still-developing emotional intelligence and susceptibility to peer pressure.Early exposure to social media, where these harmful behaviors are more prevalent, increases their risk of being targeted.

The anonymity provided by online platforms emboldens bullies to engage in more aggressive and hurtful behavior. This lack of accountability can make the experience even more traumatizing for victims, as they feel powerless and unable to identify or confront their attacker. The addictive nature of social media can disrupt sleep patterns, affecting the overall health of teenagerss.

Late-night scrolling may contribute to irregular sleep, leading to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and a decline in academic performance. Naomi Baron, author of the book, “Always On” focuses on the impact that social media has on the attention spans and critical thinking skills.

A recent study in India revealed that 60% of Indians aged 9-17 spend more than 3 hours on social media and other gaming platforms like Pubg, Free fire etc.

As social media continues to play a significant role in the lives of teenagers, it is essential to recognize both the positive and negative impacts. Parents, educators, and society at large must collaborate to establish a balanced approach that fosters responsible digital citizenship and safeguards the well-being of the younger generation.
